Secretariat Movie (2010) Facts

Secretariat portrays the true story of unlikely racehorse owner Penney Chenery and her 1973 Triple Crown Champion Secretariat. The chestnut Thoroughbred became the first horse in 25 years to win the Triple Crown when he swept the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, breaking records at each track. His final time in the Kentucky Derby, and his 31-length margin of victory in the Belmont have never been beaten. His record-time in the Preakness remained unofficial because Pimlico's timer broke during the race and they refused to acknowledge the evidence recorded and proven on that mysterious invention called "film". Secretariat was honored as Horse of the Year twice, the first time being a rare honor itself for a two-year-old.

Secretariat opens in theaters on October 8, 2010

The film will be released by Walt Disney Pictures.

Secretariat Movie Trailer

No trailer yet. Here is an ESPN SportsCentury feature on Secretariat's Triple Crown, with clips from his races; and interviews with Penney Chenery, Ron Turcotte, Bill Nack, and others.

Secretariat Movie Crew

The Secretariat Movie is being directed by Randall Wallace, director of We Were Soldiers, and writer of Braveheart.

Secretariat is produced by Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray of Mayhem Pictures (Miracle, Invincible).

Secretariat's screenplay is by Mike Rich, screenwriter of Radio and The Rookie.

The Secretariat film score will be composed by Nick Glennie-Smith, composer of the acclaimed scores for We Were Soldiers and The Man In The Iron Mask (in fact, his music got better reviews than both films).

Behind the camera for Secretariat is Academy Award®-winning cinematographer Dean Semler (2012, Dances with Wolves, We Were Soldiers, and Apocalypto).

Secretariat Movie Actors

Diane Lane (Killshot, Hollywoodland) is Penny Chenery (Penny Tweedy), the housewife who knew nothing about horses before taking over her ailing father's Meadow Stables, and owning Secretariat.

John Malkovich (Burn After Reading; BeowulfShadow of the Vampire; and Jonah Hex (due in theatres on June 18, 2010) stars as jockey turned trainer Lucien Lauren, conditioner of Secretariat.

Otto Thorwarth portrays Ron Turcotte, Secretariat's regular rider. Otto Thorwarth is a professional jockey, with more than 1,300 wins at tracks including Turfway Park, River Downs, and Keeneland.

Dylan Walsh (We Were Soldiers and TV's "Nip/Tuck") portrays Chenery's skeptical husband, John Tweedy. Walsh describes his character as, "a little bit stuck in the 1950s and keeps telling his wife, 'Never mind this little dream about a horse. You need to come home and take care of the kids and cook dinner.'"

Nelsan Ellis (HBO's True Blood) plays Eddie Sweat, Secretariat's groom.

Scott Glenn (The Silence of the Lambs, The Bourne Ultimatum, Nights in Rodanthe) plays Penny Chenery's father, Christopher Chenery.

Kevin Connolly (TV's Entourage) and Eric Lange (TV's Lost) are featured as William Nack and Andy Beyer, the reporters who first recognize Secretariat's potential.

Fred Thompson ("Law & Order," "Die Hard 2," "In the Line of Fire") plays Bull Hancock, a master horse breeder who was president of the Racing League and a friend of Chenery's father.

Dylan Baker (Spider-Man 2 and 3, and Revolutionary Road) portrays Penny Chenery's brother.

Sean Michael Cunningham (from the upcoming Jonah Hex movie) stars as Penny Chenery's son, Chris.

Margo Martindale (The Savages, Million Dollar Baby) portrays Chenery's assistant.

Amanda "AJ" Michalka (of the Aly & AJ group, and the film Super Sweet 16 - The Movie-- two things Andy Beyer loves more than horse racing, we're sure) portrays her daughter.

James Cromwell (The Green Mile, TV's 24) portrays Ogden Phipps, a wealthy financier and pillar of horse racing.

Secretariat Movie Production Status

Secretariat began filming in Kentucky in October, 2009; at Churchill Downs in Louisville, and Keeneland in Lexington. Filming is now continuing in Louisiana, where Richmar Stables has been transformed into Meadow Farm at which Secretariat was born. The former site of Evangeline Downs (now a training center) is being used to recreate different racetracks.
