Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) has established a charity fund in honor of Eight Belles, the only horse to breakdown in 134 years of Kentucky Derby runnings. The filly brokedown after finishing a brilliant second-place to Big Brown in this year's Derby. The Eight Belles Memorial Fund will help fund important research into preventing catastrophic racehorse injuries and breakdowns, and retraining retired Thoroughbred racehorses for secondary careers.
After racing in the Kentucky Derby, about a quarter of a mile into the gallop out, Eight Belles suddenly fell forward and broke both front ankles. The injuries were so devastating beyond repair that she had to be humanely euthanized immediately. After the accident, the TCA began to recieve funds in honor of Eight Belles, some from horse racing fans who were donating the earnings from their Kentucky Derby winning tickets (Eight Belles won Place).
