Zenyatta remains unbeaten after winning the Grade 1, $5 million Breeders Cup Ladies Classic in an unforgettable performance against seven rivals in the 1 1/8 mile race over Santa Anita's Pro-Ride track. After trailing the field as far back as 10 lengths behind, four-year-old Zenyatta bounded forward from outside of her rivals as they exited the final turn, drawing away in an effortless-looking performance, with her ears pricked up as she won by 1 1/2 lengths in her ninth straight victorious l... I missed ESPN's Breeders Cup Selection show when it first-aired on Wednesday. Too bad I tuned in for Thursday's repeat on ESPN Classic, because the show was nothing but a complete missed opportunity that ESPN should be ashamed of. The Breeders Cup is fourteen World Championship races, but the only races they focused on were the Breeders Cup Classic and the Ladies Classic, and there was not really any insight into the contenders, much less any type of race analysis at all. Why it was called a... Read More
The Breeders Cup has always been the most stressful of all the big race days for me--the Cup runeth over, big time. Fourteen championship races, two days, familiar heroes start to look quite vulnerable in very strong fields, and... euros, my god the euros... with their time form ratings, no points-of-call/beaten-lengths running line, Frankie Dettori doing backflips all over the place. Curlin, take me away. If you're still handicapping, welcome to the club. Here are the tools of the trad... Read More
The fields for the 2008 Breeders Cup World Championships are set, with a whopping 14 championship races to take place over the course of two days--Friday and Saturday, October 24th and 25th. This year's Breeders Cup features the all-time richest racehorse, four-year-old Curlin, with earnings of over $10 million, trying to become only the second horse to ever repeat winning the $5,000,000 BC Classic. The 2008 Breeders Cup also stars Zenyatta as the heavy favorite in the Ladies Classic--this fo... Read More
Casino Drive remains unbeaten after winning a $52,000 Allowance at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meet on Sunday. Jockey Victor Espinoza brought Casino Drive home in a sharp 1:42 for 1 1/16 miles. The Japanese colt's victorious synthetic debut was meant to prep him for the Breeders Cup Classic, which is a little less than two weeks from today's race--the Classic will be run on Saturday, October 25th, and will potentially pit Casino Drive against Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, and Horse of the Year,...
