Santa Anita's 72nd season opens Friday, December 26. The Winter/Spring meet opener is highlighted by the Grade I, $250,000 Malibu Stakes featuring Travers Stakes and Santa Anita Derby winner Colonel John. Pioneerof The Nile is bound to explore the 2009 Derby Trail, and continue to plague me with his awkwardly written name, after a gutsy win in the 2008 edition of the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity. Peppers Pride was so impressive in her 19th consecutive win that her connections became more hesitant to retire her as they originally believed they were probably going to do afterward. They have already looked at stallions in Kentucky and New Mexico to breed her to in the event that they retire her as this year comes to an end. Big Drama won his fifth race in a row by winning the Grade 3 Delta Jackpot Stakes at Delta Downs tonight. Big Drama held Kentucky Cup Juvenile winner West Side Bernie at bay to win the race for two-year-olds by about one length. Eibar Coa was the pilot for the David Fawkes trainee.
