Title: Curlin shipping to Santa Anita for Breeders Cup Classic
Tags: Curlin BreedersCup 2008
Blog Entry: The 2008 Breeders Cup Classic will be contended by Curlin, defending his Horse of the Year and BC Classic titles. Principal owner Jess Jackson announced the horse's return to the Breeders Cup about an hour after Curlin won the Jockey Club Gold Cup and became the first horse to win over $10 million in his career. Curlin will ship to California on September 28. The Breeders Cup Classic will finally pit four-year-old Curlin against this year's top three-year-old, Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown. Other possible Classic contenders are Go-Between, Commentator, Colonel John, Pyro, Well Armed, Macho Again, Smooth Air, and Student Council. Curlin had previously been taken out of contention for the Breeders Cup this Summer, when Jess Jackson suggested that since a horse had already won the BC Classic two years in a row, Curlin may try to become the first horse to win the Breeders Cup Classic and the Arc de Triomphe in France. After taking second--and nearly third--to Breeders Cup turf champs in his turf debut, Jackson decided Curlin was no longer bound for the Arc. Jackson next suggested Big Brown could meet Curlin in other races besides the Breeders Cup, but none of the races he suggested were part of Big Brown's preps for the Breeders Cup Classic. With Curlin being a stalker , and Big Brown capable of pressing or leading all the way, the two Thoroughbreds' running styles are bound to compliment each other in a thrilling competition for the $5 million Breeders Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park's Oak Tree meet. The Classic will be run on Saturday October 25th, with live television coverage on ESPN.
